A SATELLITE is spiralling out of control and could head towards Earth, its operator has confirmed.

Spacecraft construction company SES says it lost control of its satellite on June 17 and is now struggling locate it. SES’s AMC-9 satellite, which was 36,000 kilometres above the Earth’s surface, began spiralling out of control following a “significant anomaly”.

The company, which bills itself as a provider of “reliable and secure satellite and ground communications solutions”, said the satellite began breaking apart in the last few days. In light of this, SES hired space situational awareness company ExoAnalytic Solutions to monitor the drifting debris from the equipment. ExoAnalytic's CEO, Doug Hendrix, told ArsTechnica: "We have seen several pieces come off of it over the past several days.”

Brian Weeden, a space situational awareness expert, said: "The challenge is that those pieces, in human terms, will be up there almost forever, and will present a long-term navigational hazard.” He added: "This will definitely increase the odds of collisions over the Americas, but I don't think this is going to set off a chain reaction.”
